Privacy Policy
Last updated: 8 September 2026
This policy explains what Speedcoach ("the app", "we", "us") collects when you use the Speedcoach Android application, and why. It is written for drivers, not lawyers — if anything here is unclear, contact us using the details at the end.
The short version
Speedcoach watches your GPS location to warn you about speed cameras and tell you your current speed. That location tracking happens entirely on your phone. We do not upload your route, your GPS trail, or a record of everywhere you've driven. When a trip ends, the app sends us a small summary — distance, duration, top speed, a safety score, and a list of notable events (like an overspeed warning) — and nothing else about that trip.
1. Location data
What we collect
While you have an active trip running in the app, Speedcoach reads your device's precise location (GPS) continuously, including while the app is in the background or the screen is off. This is what lets an alert fire before you reach a camera, even if you're using another app like Spotify or Google Maps at the time.
We also request "background location" permission from Android specifically so that alerts keep working when Speedcoach isn't the app on your screen.
What happens to it
Every GPS fix is processed and stored on your device only, in a local database, for the duration of the trip. It is not transmitted to our servers or any third party while the trip is in progress.
When you end a trip, the app builds a single summary document containing:
- Start and end time, distance, and duration
- Top speed and average speed
- A computed safety score (0–100)
- A list of notable events during the trip (e.g. "overspeed for 8 seconds near Thika Superhighway") — this includes an approximate location and speed for each event, but not the full continuous GPS trace
Only this summary is uploaded, to let you view your trip history in the app. The raw, continuous location trace never leaves your device, and is deleted from local storage once the summary is generated (or once you delete the trip).
Why we need "all the time" location access
Camera alerts must keep firing while your phone is locked, or while you're using navigation or music apps — that is the entire point of the product. If Speedcoach could only see your location while it was the active app on screen, it could not do the one thing it exists to do.
2. Account information
Speedcoach uses Google Sign-In for account creation — there is no separate Speedcoach password. When you sign in, we receive:
- Your name
- Your email address
- Your Google account profile photo (if you have one)
We use this only to identify your account, show your name/photo in the app, and let you access your trip history and settings from any device.
3. Analytics and crash reporting
We use Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics (both Google products) to understand how the app is used and to catch bugs.
- Firebase Analytics collects app usage events (e.g. which screens are opened, whether a trip was started) and basic device information (device model, OS version, rough location at the city/region level derived from IP address — not your precise GPS location). It does not receive your continuous GPS trace.
- Firebase Crashlytics collects crash reports if the app fails unexpectedly, including a stack trace and device information, so we can fix the bug. Crash reports may incidentally include the screen or action you were performing when the app crashed, but not your location history.
4. Third parties who process your data
| Who | What they do | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Google (Firebase: Auth, Firestore, Analytics, Crashlytics) | Sign-in, trip summary storage, analytics, crash reporting | Account info, trip summaries, app usage/crash data |
| Google Play (Billing) | Processes Speedcoach Pro subscription payments | Purchase and subscription status — Speedcoach never receives or stores your payment card details |
| Vercel | Hosts this website | Standard web request logs (IP address, browser) for pages on speedcoach.co.ke |
| RevenueCat | Reconciles subscription status between Google Play and our servers | Purchase tokens and subscription status, not payment details |
We do not sell your data to anyone, for any reason.
5. How long we keep your data
- Trip summaries are kept until you delete them from the app, or until you delete your account.
- Account information (name, email, photo) is kept for as long as your account exists.
- Analytics and crash data is retained by Firebase according to Google's standard retention windows, currently up to 14 months for Analytics event data.
To delete your account and all associated data, use the "Delete account" option in Settings, or contact us using the details below. We will delete your data within 30 days of a verified request, except where we are required to retain records by law.
6. Your rights under Kenyan law
Speedcoach processes personal data of users in Kenya and is subject to the Data Protection Act, 2019. Under the Act, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate or outdated data
- Erase your data (see "Delete account" above)
- Object to certain processing of your data
- Data portability — receive a copy of your trip history in a portable format, on request
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We will respond within the timeframe required by the Act.
7. Location accuracy disclaimer
Speed and camera location data are provided as a driving aid and are not guaranteed to be complete or accurate. See our Terms of Service for the full disclaimer — it governs how location and camera data may be used and relied upon.
